6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Indonesia
The seismic event occurred at 1458GMT, with its epicenter positioned 244 kilometers (151.6 miles) north-northwest of Tobelo, the US Geological Survey confirmed.
Initial readings placed the earthquake's magnitude at 6.7, which scientists subsequently downgraded to 6.5 before final analysis settled at 6.4. The tremor originated 52 km (32.3 mi) beneath the earth's surface.
Tobelo sits within Indonesia's North Maluku province in the nation's eastern territories, positioned close to Halmahera Island's northern edge.
Immediate damage assessments revealed no casualties or significant structural destruction.
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency determined the seismic activity would not trigger tsunami conditions but urged local populations to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks, a state-run news agency reported.
